money, money, money must be funny in the rich mans world

Whoever the person was that said "Money does not buy happiness" was obviously not a triathlete. Since I often complain about how I don't have enough money to pay for this sport I love so much, I thought I'd finally post a bit of good news.

Thanks to careful saving and and an amazing tax refund check, for the first time since I moved here 6 years ago I HAVE ZERO CREDIT CARD DEBT!
This can only mean good things for all the stuff one needs to buy for the bike!

the hills are alive with the sound of music

....and also my screams. Today was the infamous "Hell Hill Week" for Boca training. When I heard this my first thought was "wait, isn't every week Hell Hill week?" Turns out this little island has a F*#$ load of hills. And some of them are freaking steep. We ended up starting at Kapiolani Park and doing some hills around Diamond Head, including the one to take actually to the Diamond Head hike. Then we headed down Kalanianaole Hwy and did a few hills behind Portlock. We headed back on Kalaniaole and ended up doing some huge ass hill in one of the valleys. This one was so steep that I gave up 3/4 of the way with a few other people, because I knew what was coming next. Sierra Drive.

I wasn't nervous because I knew it was similar to Tantalus, but this was the first time I would be tackling such a massive hill after already riding 35 miles. Normally when we do Tantalus, that's all we do on a quick evening workout. I was hydrating and eating a ton, but I still knew I wasn't at 100%. Well, I ended up surviving Sierra Drive and then we headed back. It ended up being a 37 mile total ride and I am glad we are doing flats again next week.

For long rides, I have become a HUGE fan of Recovery e21. You can get it at the bike shop or online. I take 2 before I ride and 2 halfway through and I haven't bonked once since I started this. I really think it helps.

Other things to note this week:

1. My brother got his plane ticket for Kona. Suddenly he is flying in Friday and will make the race. Originally he didn't want to take another day off work and was just going to come after the race. He really must love his s̶i̶s̶t̶e̶r̶ Lance Armstrong.
2. I booked my hotel for Kona awhile ago. Since I have family and friends coming I did this in advance, but I was also reminded I should reserve my car so I could get one that would fit my bike before they are all taken. Done.

One more week of cycling clinic, 1 week off, then Honu training begins!

new running blogger

Just want to give a should it to my friend Melissa who just created her running blog. She is not really a runner by trade (she's more into Crossfit) but she is giving the 2012 Honolulu Marathon a chance this December. It will be her first marathon. Welcome Melissa, I look forward to following your progress!

and i'm free, i'm free fallin'

There sure are a lot of songs about falling... which is good because I fell again. More on that later.

This was a good training week, not for running and swimming so much, but really good for cycling. Usually with my training group we do 3 rides a week. One is a trainer workout, one is a short ride during the week and then there is the long ass Saturday morning ride. I have never really felt like I have really had a grasp on the trainer workouts. I finally have the answer, if you are a cyclist and do trainer workouts and don't have one... GO BUY A CADENCE METER RIGHT NOW. If you have a Garmin, chances are you can get one to connect with your watch. The cadence meter for my 405 was like $30. I worked my ass off during this weeks trainer workout mostly because I had a freaking clue what I was doing.

The Saturday ride was my longest ever, from Kualoa Ranch to Foodland on the North Shore and back. I used both my heart rate monitor and my cadence meter and really was able to adjust my speed and gears more efficiently based on what the Garmin said. The ride ended being just over 52 miles and we did one pretty steep hill on the North Shore.

I did fall... at like mile 9 the person in front of me in the pace line stopped suddenly and I hit her tire. It was a pretty hard hit but luckily the arm guards kept my arms totally unharmed, just got a pretty nasty leg bruise. It hurt pretty bad for the next 43 miles. When I stopped riding I pretty much can't move it now, but I think I just need to rest it.

Look at my wound!

Also my first "nice" pair of cycling shorts (pictured above) were awesome but my ass still hurt by mile 40! What's the secret??? I even tried the chamois cream.

quick update

Just found out none other than LANCE ARMSTRONG is signed up for the Hawaii 70.3 on June 2nd with me. No, big deal I'm sure I can catch him right? I have a feeling my brother is going to be a lot more excited about his visit when he learns this piece of news. In other news, when he made his announcement it sold out.

bittersweet memories, that is all i'm taking with me

....this blog title and post is dedicated to Whitney Houston. You, indeed were every woman.

This week was a really good training week. I've ramped up my running, made it to cycling clinic 3 days this week and as for swimming.....*crickets*. Yeah, I didn't make it once.

Saturdays ride was possibly the hardest of my life. We practiced pace lines to from Kapiolani Park to Hawaii Kai and then we were doing a hill. When I innocently asked "where's Kamehame Ridge" I was told "oh right after Heartbreak Hill." Uhm What? A hill right after that awful hill.

So we went up Heartbreak Hill and then made a left turn at the top. Anyone familiar with this hill? We climbed all the way to the top of Kamehame ridge until it ended with a gate. But wait, we didn't let that gate stop us, we carried our bikes over it and then went to the very top where there is a hangglider landing area. It was insane. I made it very close to the top. Once I saw people tipping over because it was so steep I decided to just nicely get off my bike and walk it up. It was so steep I was almost not able to walk it up. Over all it was amazing, with an awesome view at the top.

Me at the very top Kamehame Ridge

Me and Pardis at the top of what seemed like the world.

it's my party and i'll cry if i want to

I have no idea how I haven't mentioned yet that my birthday is in 6 days!
This year I was pretty against celebrating. At first I was planning to do a beach BBQ since I've been dying to do one but then it became expensive, overwhelming, and just not an option.

I took off work the Friday before and the Monday of my actual birthday and I was OK with just hanging out with my smaller groups of friends and just relaxing, but then I was given an option I could not refuse. I was told that I was having a party Sunday night and "with the theme "me party" and I can sit in the corner and not talk to anyone at any time I choose." If you don't know what a "me party" is, stop right now and go see the muppet movie. Plus my friend has amazing games for her Kinect as well as Karaoke.

Anyway, I don't know how I lucked in to such good friends but I am very excited for an awesome long training weekend full of running, swimming, biking, drinking and eating (not necessarily in that order)

oh i can't forget this evening or your face as you were leaving

Yeah so tonight I decided to skip cycling clinic and instead do the following:

1. drink a 40
2. put on my pajamas at 5pm
3. paint my toenails
4. eat ho ho's
5. sing Mariah Carey songs on my lanai

I've been a little stressed lately. Between work, school, cycling, and some personal junk I feel like I haven't sat down in weeks. I know this weekend is going to be crazy so I thought why not miss a trainer workout night. Not that they aren't important, but after a 10 mile hike this week and biking Tantalus I'm exhausted. Rest days are good, and I am not feeling guilty about it at all! (Maybe a little because I'm missing something I pay for.)

Saturdays ride is going to be crazy up at the North Shore, more updates about that this weekend!
